Deryl Gulliford RRT, MHA, FACCA, FAAMA
Respiratory Care Program Director - Northern Oklahoma College
Associate Dean for Respiratory Care - Independence University

I was born and raised in northwest Ohio, graduated from Ohio State University, and practiced as a respiratory therapist and cardiovascular perfusionist for several years prior to my training in healthcare administration. I received a masters degree in community health administration/health planning from the University of Cincinnati, and at that point moved up to Director of Cardiopulmonary Services. I also studied in the British National Health Service, completing a fellowship in the NHS, London. I am now a Fellow and Diplomate of the American Academy of Medical Administrators. My peers elected me the 2005 William Newcomer Healthcare Executive of the Year for the United States. And we have something in common…… I am also a student, working on my Juris Doctorate online.
Throughout my career, community wellness and holistic medicine have been crucial to my personal mission and my success. I've held CEO positions at three hospitals since 1991, including Community Memorial Hospital in Defiance County, Ohio which made the “Top 100 Hospitals in America” list of Modern Healthcare magazine. I completed construction of a new community healthcare facility for Stevens County Hospital in southwest Kansas (Hugoton). I also served as Vice-President of the Pioneer Health Network, a voluntary group of 18 community hospitals and clinics in Oklahoma and Kansas. I retired from healthcare administration a few years ago and began a career as a full-time academic.
Outside of the hospital, I am active at the Board level in Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Hospice and the American Heart Association. My wife Terrie and I have three amazing kids, Carrie-29, Jacob-24, Lorrie-21, one totally spoiled granddaughter Makina-12, and one new arrival this year, granddaughter Kendra ;-)
My personal interests include golf, natural health, fitness training, public speaking and online teaching. I am honored to be working with you. I love Respiratory Care and I love teaching online. You can reach me on cell 405-219-6715 and I check deryl.gulliford@independence.edu several times each day.
